DOGID: 2854
Name: Big Molly (New Mexico)lab-chessie mix
Location: Tijeras, NM
Age: 10
Color: Brown
Sex: female
Weight: 95
Neutered? yes
Vaccines:
  • Rabies
  • DHLPP
  • Kennel Cough
  • Heartworm Preventative
  • Flea Pill
Heartworm Negative? Yes
Health Conditions: Molly is very overweight, which we will be working on. She also had a growth on her eye and a few sores on her that will heal in time. Update 7/12/16: Molly has had some significant vet workups to assess her issues. The growth on her eyelid was surgically removed (as it was irritating her eye), along with a couple small growths on her muzzle and paw. She also had a dental (her teeth actually were in good shape, so she may not be as old as 10). X-rays showed that her hips are not great, one side in particular, not surprising given her weight. A couple vertebrae mid-spine are more or less fused - vet said that could cause some local stiffness or discomfort but not serious. She will likely need to be on meds to control arthritis pain indefinitely; we are hoping the amount can be reduced as her weight comes down. She has lost 5 pounds so far, down to 100 from 105, and her mobility has improved slightly. Update: as of Sept 2, 2016, Molly is down another 5 lbs to 95. Her activity level and desire to exercise are both increasing.
Housetrained? yes
Dog surrendered to Rescue because: Abandoned/stray
Other Reason: She was kept in a space with a Golden at the shelter. But not much else is known about her at this time. We will update as we know more. Update 7/12/2016 Except for managing her weight and associated mobility issues, Molly is an easy dog. Super sweet, just REALLY wants to be with people as much as possible. She would love a home where she can just hang out with her people (ideally in the middle of the kitchen while everyone steps over her while preparing meals and dropping (diet-worthy) scraps). Due to her weight and joint issues she is not an active dog but likes frequent short walks. She was fine with the grandchildren visiting her foster home, although the visits were brief so caution should of course be exercised until certain. So far she seems fine with other dogs, will give a short bark of one gets in her face too much.
Good With:
  • Other Dogs
  • Strangers
  • Children
Dog Likes:
  • Car Rides
Working Ability:
Working Comments: Molly is not a working dog. She is a lie-at-your-feet-until-it-is-time-for-dinner dog. She walks well on a leash; so far is also fine walking off leash (just not very far).
Behavioral Problems:
Other Behavioral Problems: Once in a while, if not taken outside frequently enough/long enough Molly will sometimes poop a little when getting up from lying down. This is easy to manage by ensuring that she has ample opportunity outside before bedtime and after meals, and we are hoping this will resolve as her weight comes down.
Bitten? No
Bite Explanation: unknown as she is from a shelter, but she is so sweet I don't see that as something that occurred
Commands known:
  • Sit
  • Stay
  • Down
Tricks: We are working on the "Do your business" command.
Other Info: Molly is an extremely gentle, sweet and friendly dog. She seems very content regardless of her surroundings and during transitions. She gives gentle little kisses and really needs a loving home to spend the rest of her days; she will reward her people with love and affection.
