Memphis is a tall boy that
weighs about 90 pounds but, from the looks of
him, his frame could stand an addition 15 pounds!! Once he's healthy,
he is going to be one BIG boy!!!! Unfortunately, he registered a high
positive for heartworms so he's been dealing with those unwanted guests
for quite some time. Given the extent of the heartworm infestation,
it is going to be a sloooow and expensive journey for Memphis back to
a clean health certificate. Even through we will need to kill them off
a little at a time so as not to stress Memphis' system unduly, we are
hoping that we are evicting the heartworms in time
and no permanent damage has been done. Since his owner obviously didn't
take care of Memphis's medical needs, it's no big surprise that Memphis
is totally clueless when it comes to basic training and house manners.
Even though Memphis is not up to speed on his social skills, he is very
sweet, playful, energetic, and curious. With your help, we are hoping to
pull Memphis back from the brink, teach him about living as a loved
member of a family, and find him a forever home.
July 21 update:
Memphis is doing well. During his treatment he is being fostered in
Hinsdale, IL. Joe, his foster dad, can't stand a skinny dog so Memphis
has been getting cottage cheese, beef tips, beef & chicken liver, and anything
else Joe finds on sale at his local butcher/deli, in addition to his kibble
and beef shanks to entertain Memphis in his crate while he is under a limited
exercise order. Memphis has gained almost 4 pounds since his first
hospitalization -- no more bony butt! Memphis goes
back in the hospital for his second shot today so we are expecting some back-sliding on
his weight. Once we evict his unwelcome "guests", we're hoping that Memphis will, once
again, gain more weight. He's going to be one HUGE male. He's the size of a
small pony now and, with some weight and muscle on him, he will be a
force of nature! Good thing that his temperament is that of a sweet puppy.
July 30 update:
Memphis is out of the hospital after his second series of shots and back at his foster home as of July 28.
He had two treatments this time. He had a "usual" reaction fever and pain, but within the normal of what
happens to a dog when they go through this procedure. He needed some pain pills but was otherwise
fine – a vast improvement over the last time when it was touch-and-go as to whether he would make it.
Once he was stable from the 2nd shot, he got the 3rd a day or two later. His X-ray was much improved, just not 100 % yet.
He must have been stir-crazy because he would not settle down on the way back to his foster home. Picking
him up from his foster home, he was happy to spread himself across the back of the van, with all the AC vents
on HIGH, with a big smile on his face!! Picking him up from the vet, he blasted over the barrier in the van and
jumped in the front seat. Needless to say, Memphis was immediately crated!
Memphis will need to rest for a couple of weeks and then we will see if he likes to swim. If Memphis gets too excited,
then he will have to stop but, so long as he will take a leisurely dip, we will let him get a little exercise by swimming.
If Memphis continues to improve, he will be altered on August 25, 2008, and ready for adoption by the first week in September!!
August 11th update:
Memphis continues to improve. This weekend he was allowed to go on an easy leash walk. Memphis was thrilled
to get out! We hope to have some new pictures soon.
September 10th update:
Memphis is all better! He was neutered on August 25th. He has his last
treatment for the baby heartworms on Auguest 26th. He was given the all-clear
from his vet on September 9th. He is such an incredible dog and is
going to make someone a wonderful companion. Thanks to
everyone that helped us to help Memphis!! Without your support it would
not have been possible.
Please check back for more
updates on his progress.
