Dear Friends of Chesapeake's:
We were introduced to your rescue site by friends who know our situation.. We need to seek a better situation for one of our dogs. We are serious dog lovers and responsible pet owners. This is a well thought-out decision on our part.
We have 2 labs, a rhodesian/lab mix and our Chesapeake Retriever. One dog was rescued from the CT save a pup program, one dog was adopted from an abusive family, one was purchased from a lab breeder and the Chessie came from friends who had a litter down in Maryland, which is Griffin the chocolate chessie we need to offer up for adoption..so we have had a mix of experience with obtaining and raising different dogs from different situations.
Griffin is chessapeake/lab mix. We adopted him down in Maryland when he was 8 weeks old. He has lived with us in Eastern Connecticut since in a coastal area. He is raised and trained as a house pet. We are certain he is more chessie than lab but do not have proof of pedigree
He is large, both in size- about 80 pounds- and in disposition meaning , he is quite dominant, physically powerful and an ongoing training challenge. He is definitely a good dog but has a bite tendency for moving targets like bicycles, joggers, and skate boards… he does not chase cars and he is not at all mean-spirited but when he sees movement described above he gets a bit aggressive, and we therefore contain him on a leash at all times. Even when we run him in the park in early morning he is on a very long leash as he will run the moment he sees birds, deer, squirrels, bikes, runners etc.
He nipped a girl in our neighborhood about 8 months ago while she was riding a bike and last week (May 16, 2010) he bit a neighborhood boy who was a stranger to Griffin while his friends were riding skateboards in front of our house. We think he was agitated by the skateboards and think he was torqued up when the boy put his hand out to pet him. The boy needed one stitch as Griffin did break the skin on the hand. The boy is OK but we are not.
We live in a neighborhood of homes on quarter acres and there are children everywhere, and therefore bikes and running etc.
In any case Griffin is not going to do well in a neighborhood situation. He needs to be in a more rural setting and perhaps in the care of a family with stronger training background than ours. He is very friendly and loving toward our family and friends that he knows but he definitely shifts gears when a situation arises as described above.
He is happiest when we run him hard, swim him and get him retrieving sticks and toys in the surf.
I joke somewhat here, but I bet he would be a great sled dog or one of those water jumping/diving dogs as he is extremely fast and stronger than any dog I have ever owned.
Please be kind enough to advise whether any of you kind rescue folks have any ideas which could suit this beautiful animal.
We would really appreciate your input and advice. Thank you
