Dog surrendered to Rescue because: Other
Other Reason: Maggie doesn't do well living with our toddler (who constantly wants to play with Maggie, and she will grunt and bark). Maggie's anxiety level is increasing as our daughter gets older, and we don't want to risk escalation around our children. Maggie is OK with some dogs, and very wary of others. If another dog is extremely fearful or submissive, Maggie will sometimes display excessive dominance. She's never bitten another dog or even attacked another dog, but her body language and barking can be very offputting.
Good With: strangers
Dog Likes: water, retrieving, car rides;
Working Ability: excellent
Working Comments: Maggie is a smart dog and very trainable, so with an experienced trainer, she could absolutely become a fantastic working dog.
Behavioral Problems: digging, other problems
Other Behavioral Problems: Our dear Maggie is a straightforward Chesapeake Bay Retriever. She's very well trained, smart, and overall a great dog with no health problems. However, we now have a toddler and true to her breed, she's not good with little kids (or lots of chaos) - she doesn't like it when our toddler plays with her. We don't think she'd ever hurt our daughter, but her anxiety level seems to be increasing as our daughter gets older which is the primary reason we think we need to find a better home for Maggie. Separately, Maggie has also started going after other dogs in a manner that feels somewhat random. It also feels defensive - she's afraid of certain dogs on the trail, etc. She's never bitten another dog or truly "attacked" another dog, but this would be something to keep an eye on.
Bitten? No
Bite Explanation:
Commands known: Sit, Stay, Down, Come, Heel, Bathroom
Other Info: Maggie is a sweet, well-trained dog who would be best suited by the following: - A calm environment - Ability to have regular exercise (ideally 2+ miles/day of hiking/running) - No other dogs in the house - No little kids living in the house (though she'd be totally fine with visitors - it's the constant chaos of little kids) - Relatively experienced dog owners
