The
Adoption Process
Thank you for your interest in adopting a
rescued Chesapeake Bay Retriever! There are wonderful Chessies looking for
new homes at any given time across the country. Rescued Chessies come in
all ages, sizes, colors and in both sexes, but they are all looking for
the same thing: love and companionship from a new
family!
Prospective owners are interviewed in their own
homes by a Rescue volunteer to ensure that families understand the
responsibility of owning and caring for a Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Note
that we rarely place Rescue dogs in homes with children under 7 years of
age for reasons of safety, for the child and the dog. In most cases, a
securely fenced yard or area is requested for the dog's safety and
protection. For senior Chessies (dogs 8 years or older), the fencing
requirement may be waived.
Chesapeake Bay Retriever Relief & Rescue
is a national organization. We have volunteers across the country.
All Chessies admitted to Rescue are given a thorough
physical examination, receive necessary medical treatment, and are
neutered or spayed, immunized and have a fecal exam for parasites and a
heartworm test performed before placement.
The procedure for adopting a Chesapeake Bay
Retriever through Chesapeake Bay Retriever Relief & Rescue is as
follows:
- Complete our online Adoption Application.
- You should look over our list of Rescue Dogs
and let us
know which dogs you may be interested in when you send in your
application.
- Once the application is received, you will
be contacted by a rescuer in your area. This rescuer, the Adoption Coordinator,
will probably set up a home visit to discuss the needs of Chesapeake Bay Retrievers with you and
your family, check the safety of your property, etc. This is a great
time to ask questions, voice concerns, discuss what you love in a dog,
what you'd rather avoid, etc.If you
are not contacted within 7 days please email info@cbrrescue.org.
Once your home visit is conducted you should contact homes holding
dogs that may match your needs.
Finding a dog for you may happen quickly, or may take some time, depending on your
particular requirements versus the dogs available at any given time.
- The adoption donation can range from $150 to
$350, depending on the age and veterinary condition of the rescued dog.
These donations help defray boarding and veterinary expenses, but do not
cover the entire expense we incur for each dog.
- We reserve the right to refuse an
application if the home situation or environment is deemed incompatible
with the needs of a rescued Chesapeake Bay Retriever.
Our rescue is comprised wholly of
hard-working volunteers whose only reward is seeing these wonderful Brown
dogs in loving homes, given a second chance for a happy life. We will try
and match you with a devoted, loving companion. Thank you for your
interest!
