Horrors and Heroes...The Retrieval of a Retriever

Marcus is a handsome male CBR mix presently in rescue in New Mexico. His foster dad was awakened in the middle of the night by Marcus coughing and gagging in respiratory distress. He was unable to move. Marcus was taken to the vets and from there rushed to an emergency animal hospital in Albuquerque. Blood work discovered that Marcus had ingested poison. All other dogs in the foster home were unaffected and a thorough inspection of the foster area found nothing. Marcus must have found remnants of an animal poisoned by someone else.

Marcus was given Vitamin K to help clot the blood. When his red blood count went dangerously low, close to the point where life could not be sustained, Marcus received whole blood transfusions.

The fast action saved  "one of the nicest dogs I ever fostered "  his foster dad happily reports. The emergency clinic immediately treated for the worst case scenario, expensive but necessary and beyond the scope of the local vet.

CBRRR volunteers are committed to the welfare of the breed and each individual dog in its care. When faced with the dilemma of insurmountable expenses stacked up against the welfare of a dog there is little choice but to retrieve the retriever. The "R&R " in CBRR&R state our objective clearly. RELIEF and RESCUE. The unexpected expenses emergency situations require are part of rescue. Although absorbed into the general accounting, they do incur large deficits in our budget.

We  are alerting our readership and reminding them that keen observation and quick action are the best defense against unexpected calamities that befall our canine friends. We also ask that you consider a special donation at this time to augment our funds in order that we can, and will, be there for the next retriever in distress.

Please note that any funds received in excess of funds necessary for Marcus's medical needs will be applied to veterinary expenses incurred by CBRR&R for other dogs in our care.
